osteopathy & kids

Osteopaths are trained to take a clear and thorough history and assess your child to identify if there are any musculoskeletal stress or strains on the body that could be contributing to your child's current symptoms. We are happy to work along side with General Practitioners, Maternal health nurses, Lactation consultants and Paediatricians and will refer on to these practitioners if it is relevant for your child.

Our osteopath Gemma has a particular interest in musculoskeletal issues in children and has completed a Diploma in Paediatric Osteopathy (DPO) at the Foundation for Paediatric Osteopathy in London. As part of this further two years post-graduate training, she worked under supervision in their charitable clinic treating children and supporting families at the Osteopathic Centre for Children in Wandsworth London.

If you would like more information please call or email the clinic to talk to the osteopath or make an appointment.

What to expect from your young child’s osteopathic appointment

Before you come:

Try to make your appointment time at a time of day when your child is usually settled For older children try to give them a snack before their treatment. Young babies may be fed during the appointment. Please bring favourite toys or books for your child to look at (there is a selection of toys and books at the clinic). Discharge notes and the maternal child health book (green or blue book) are useful tools and it's helpful if you can bring them with you to the first appointment.

During the treatment:

A thorough case history of your pregnancy, birth and the infant's general medical history will be taken, followed by any relevant physical, orthopaedic and osteopathic assessment. Your osteopath will discuss their findings and give a cause (diagnosis) before providing treatment. Treatment involves hands-on techniques to help the body restore its natural state of balance, alignment and function.

Afterwards:

It is common for babies/children to sleep well after treatment. Occasionally there is a period of restlessness that may last 24-48 hours.
